The now infamous recent hire of Sarah Jeong by the New York Times has caused a new surge of debate about what racism actually entails. Ms. Jeong’s extremely disparaging statements against white people for just being white were truly horrible.
The Times defended Thursday its hiring of Ms. Jeong as its lead opinion writer on technology after the emergence of more than a dozen racially charged tweets, such as “[d]umbass f-ing white people, “white men are bullsh—,” and “f– white women lol.”
These remarks might sound terrible, but they aren’t racist. That is, according to the Left’s ‘new’ definition of racism. This definition declares that it is impossible to be racist against white people.
What Is Racism?
According to the Merriam Webster’s online dictionary, racism is first defined as,
a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
This seems a straightforward definition. It should apply to an individual or group who held these kinds of beliefs regardless of their own race.
For example, this would obviously apply to someone who was a white supremacist and of the KKK. Regardless of the very unlikely event that the person might be of a different racial group.
Therefore, the same should also be asserted of those who identify with such as the Nation of Islam in America. Regardless of their racial affiliation or identity. Here is some evidence of the racism from the Nation of Islam’s leader, Louis Farrakhan.
Videos posted to Farrakhan’s Facebook page show the Nation of Islam leader claiming that Jews are secretly controlling government agencies to suppress black Americans, blaming Jews for “weaponizing” marijuana with “chemicals” to “feminize” black men, and warning against interracial marriage — which he blames on “the enemy” in Hollywood — to keep the black race “from being any further mongrelized.”
“Not so fast dictionary,” say the provocateurs on the Left. They have a slightly different, and, by their assessment, a better definition of racism. Facebook has said that Farrakhan’s statements do not violate their hate-speech rules. It appears FB uses the same leftist definition of racism.
The Leftist Version of Racism
Their better definition is really a specifically qualified version of the dictionary meaning. It qualifies the racism by adding to the definition a particular condition. Racism exists only with a combination of both prejudice and position of power.
The reasoning has been that because white people occupy most of the positions of power in society, and other races do not, only they can be branded as racist. Moreover, the oppressed races cannot be racist toward whites because only the oppressing race can be racist.
While this qualified racism can be tied to a kind of reasoning, it is not reasonable in the slightest. That’s because the logic of the Left’s definition is nullified by a faulty premise.
The Faulty Premise of The Left’s Version of Racism
It should be noted that because a logical conclusion is valid, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is true. For example, I could propose a premise that humanity is able to create a utopia on earth. Utopia on earth does not exist. This fact alone does not invalidate the premise.
I could perhaps use arguments about the lower classes being oppressed by the Bourgeoisie. I could even conclude that Socialism is the only method which could accomplish the creation of utopia.
Though the premise is technically valid, it is untrue. History has shown this. Most logical conclusions are both valid and true, as are their premises. But if the premise is untrue, the conclusion will be untrue as well.
That’s what is wrong with the Left’s qualified definition of racism. This definition has less to do with prejudice than it has to do with leftist idealism and Socialism. It is simply packaged and projected as having to do with race.
The gigantic error is that this version of racism can’t be about race. Why? Because in another place or context, a different race might hold all the power. The following is a fitting example.
The Left’s Version of Racism in South Africa
A very under-reported and significant story concerning actual racist government activity is the situation in South Africa. Since 2010, the nation has witnessed a severe rise in attacks on white farmers there.
Most of the farmland is owned by the white minority in the nation. These attacks are seen as a call to kick these farmers off of their land because they are white. The majority ruling African National Congress agrees.
[South African President] Ramaphose is going forward with a racist policy to confiscate land without compensation from the white minority in South Africa.
If the Left embraces their qualification of racism, they would have to admit that whites can be targeted with racist intent directly from a government run by blacks. Thus, blacks can be racist toward whites.
However, the Left would still insist that even if this is racist, is ok in South Africa. Racism can be excused as a form of revenge against whites whose ancestors colonized the country and, they claim, stole their land.
Such racism is also desired by the Left because it is in service to a Socialist state. Exercising black against white racism, or vice versa is also Socialist in its nature.
The Socialist Nature of the Left’s Version of Racism
It is apparent that the Left’s kind of racism is just another manifestation of the class warfare in Marxist philosophy. Marxism pits the powerful/Bourgeoisie against the oppressed/proletariat. It is also the philosophy used in Communism.
This Socialist/Communist/Marxist* philosophy informs the Left at all levels in society. It rears its collectivist head in government, culture, entertainment, sports, religion, and the media.
However, it has been the most prominent and destructive in the realm of education. It began in the arenas of higher education and expanded rapidly into secondary and primary levels from the 1960s onward.
One destructive result of leftist infiltration in education for five decades is this false notion of racism. Some leftists know their created version of racism is false, but that is of no concern for them. Nor is the harm done by true racism, whatever the skin tone of the victims.
The utter devotion of the Left to their goal to achieve power is more important than truth to its devotees. Crying racism is a useful tool using empty words. It both promulgates leftist goals and serves to deflect from other efforts to impose Socialism.
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Ephesians 5:6 [ESV]
*These three together are all essentially the same philosophy. Leftism is my shorthand for them.
