In January of 2019, the Democrat Left in Congress and the Leftmedia were mocking President Trump (and his supporters) for claiming there was a real “crisis” on the southern border and declaring a National Emergency as a result. However, soon after Trump’s declaration even the Leftmedia has begun to admit a true crisis exists.
That’s because the figures for 2019, most notably for March, were simply undeniable. Though there are no official numbers for the month, however, the daily and weekly reports assure us that well over 100,000 apprehensions at the border will be the result.
President Trump recently reiterated a threat to close the southern border to stop the crisis.
The President is correct in this assessment as he was in declaring a National Emergency at the border for many reasons. To begin with, we must deal with what the numbers, as large as they are, do not tell us.
What the Numbers Don’t Tell Us
However, even those numbers don’t tell the full story about two facts that increase the need for immediate border security. The first fact is often passed over by most commentators, whether on the Left or Right side of the issue.
It is that the 100,000+ number does not include those who were not apprehended.
The Border Patrol used to do official estimates of the numbers of those who got away.
“For years, the Border Patrol (BP) officially used to report the ‘gotaway’ rate, those who ‘got away’ from apprehension. For decades, it was felt that on a ‘good day,’ the Border Patrol caught one in five illegal aliens, on a ‘bad day,’ the number was one in seven.”
However, that all stopped during the Obama administration. This policy change occurred in August of 2016.
Even a very conservative “gotaway” rate of 50% results in over 200,000 illegals entering last month which should make the urgency of closing the border much greater.
The second fact which many are not taking into account is the demographics of those who are coming today as compared with the last time the numbers of apprehensions were this high. That was in the early 2000s, and back then the vast majority were Mexican nationals and they were working-age males.
Today, a growing number of immigrants showing up are women with children from Central American countries, and some of them are not even the parents of those particular children! It is far easier to claim asylum as a child or a woman with children than as a single male.
U.S. Border Patrol Deputy Chief Patrol Agent Roy Villareal told Fox News, “The situation at the border is unprecedented. We are being overwhelmed with migrants, principally family units and children, and then people that are from countries other than Mexico.” Villareal added that for the first time in the Border Patrol’s history, the majority of the agency’s arrests were “other-than-Mexican nationals.”
There are also incidences of unaccompanied minors arriving at the border alone. They journey at terrible risk of assault, death, and disease creating a humanitarian border crisis that Border Patrol is charged to handle with resources totally inadequate for the job.
Border Patrol agents have heroically attempted to care for the immediate needs of the immigrant families and children for food, shelter and medical care. However, they are not enough in numbers, expertise, or facilities to cope with the current situation.
They arrive with the knowledge that if they claim asylum because of “credible fear,” they will be let into the United States upon a judgment of that claim and an order to appear in two to five years for final adjudication of their claims. Over 90% of those charged to appear in court never show up for their asylum hearing, and disappear in the country.
The news that even more large ‘caravans’ of illegal immigrants are on their way to the border to add to the current number should emphasize the absolute necessity of closing the border now.
Closing the Border Is the Only Way to Halt the Invasion
There is no question that this incredible amount of people arriving from mostly Central American nations can be legitimately called an invasion. Since these stats use the base of a fiscal year, the 2019 figures are the total from November and December of 2018 plus January of 2019.
According to the statistics from the CBP [Customs and Border Protection], in the fiscal year of 2018, migrants held between the ports of entry totaled 521,090. In FY2019 so far, the total is 318,407 and the year is only a third of the way along!
The next set of numbers will cover February, March, and April of 2019 and I predict the result will be doubled to over 600,000 in just six months! This is the equivalent to the population of a city the size of Denver, Colorado invading America in the last six months alone.
The goal of those orchestrating and encouraging this invasion is to overwhelm the immigration system and cause chaos within America as a result. The political enablers of such an army of illegals come from the Democratic party and a handful of establishment Republicans.
The business community interests lie with continuing to acquire low-wage workers which they can exploit as cheap labor for various industries. The Left’s interests are also nefarious, for they wish to transform America into a Socialist nation via a new crop of illegal aliens who consistently favor the Democratic party.
Millions upon millions of illegal aliens, perhaps as many as 40 million now already strain the limits of our government’s assistance capabilities. A recent study by Yale University put out an estimate of about 22 million illegal aliens residing in America today.
However, as has been shown in this journal and elsewhere, that figure is a huge underestimate.
By applying the additional variables of those who leave and repeat offenders, a more accurate number has been estimated by retired Border Patrol chiefs at 40 to 50 million illegals in the United States today.
Halting the Illegal Invasion Is the Key
Closing the border is not without cost. Trade across the border would cease because travel in either direction would be halted or severely restricted.
That will adversely affect the country economically. However, the economic sacrifices involved in closing the border pale next to the terrible price all levels of society would pay should the border not be closed.
The act might have to be enforced with the aid of the military, depending on how much of the border is actually ordered closed. People on both sides of the line would be at risk of injury and death should the situation escalate by some foolish behavior such as trying to rush the border.
Yet the cost of not closing the border is far greater. It could mean the death of America as we know it, and its inevitable decline into a Socialist nightmare dwarfing any in history.
Closing the border is not the solution for America’s immigration debacle. However, unless this invasion is first halted there will be no time for a solution and the collapse of the nation under the sheer volume of people illegally entering will be imminent.
The true long-term solutions involve an overhaul of the immigration policies as well as vigorous enforcement of the laws already on the books. Moreover, long-term border security must include the completion of a border wall.
Otherwise, we will continue to have a de-facto open border, and that cannot be tolerated in any sovereign nation. A nation with open borders is a nation without borders, and a nation without borders is not a nation at all.
Not only must the border be closed, but it should also remain closed until the wall is finished and the asylum loophole is fixed. America is out of time and options at this point.
So please, Mr. President, regardless of what the Left may howl and even what the courts may try to stop, follow through and exercise your Constitutional authority to close the southern border. For America’s sake, I pray, as do many others, that God continues to grant you the strength and wisdom for the task.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
